Exploring the wild… June 17, 2010

So, one of the things you’re really getting into at the moment is exploring the wild places in life. Like our back garden.

Which is all great fun. You’ve mostly stopped putting absolutely everything into your mouth all the time (now it is just most things about 20% of the time), so I feel more (more…)

Wake up.

No, rewind. I already did that at 2:30 am. For some reason you awoke early last night and just woudn’t settle again. Your dad walked you around and put you back to bed. More upset noises. So you had some boobie and finally went back down at 3:30 am.

So yes, when I woke up at 7:00 am and your dad brought you in for your morning boobie, I was a bit tired.

8:00 am breakfast. You got sick of yours (toast with avocado) and decided you were much more into my breakfast (muesli with yoghurt).

8:20 am I gave up and just gave you mine on a big metal spoon (because you’ve decided, that obviously those plastic ones are just for babies. I mean, no-one else in the house has to use the red plastic spoons, why should you? [yes – i can read your thoughts]). (more…)

WALKING!!! – Movie June 2, 2010

poogie learning to walk

walking!!

Well, all I can say is that our little family has been flat-out!

So have had not a minute to write anything on the blog, take photos, do videos. Anything.

But. Last night’s video that your dad took of your and your Aunt R1 warrants a post.

Because he finally got you on camera – WALKING!

Reaching and tentative efforts at stepping out! – Belated Movie Monday May 19, 2010

Standing – look – no hands!!

Is it a bird, is it a plane? YES! The amazing signing baby! – Movie Monday (once again belated) May 11, 2010

Hello!

It’s belated Movie Monday again.  I’ve been busy, what can I say.

You have also been busy.  Learning.  Do you remember that I’ve mentioned that I had decided then started trying to teach you baby sign language?

Well, the fruits of my and your labour are starting to pay off.  (more…)

It’s nearly mother’s day… But where is the Mother? May 8, 2010

It’s a question I ask myself quite a bit.

Who am I and where do I fit into this equation of our family and day-to-day life?

Being a mum for the past almost-year has been an all-subsuming, totally rewarding, utterly exhausting and overall transformative process. Positive. But inarguably challenging on many levels.

As an aside about being all-consuming and mind-bending:  I’m re-reading the title of this post and thinking that I’ve subconsciously started to style my language along the lines of a children’s book – we read so many each day, and my waking minutes are so focussed on looking after you.   (The book it’s based on has slipped out of my mind, but the language persists. It’ll come to me, just give it about 36 hours. Dead of the night. I’ll sit bolt upright in bed and remember.)

Coping?

Some days I think I’m coping really well, and all is gleeful (Wednesday).   (more…)

Drainage Issues – parenting for dummies May 5, 2010

Last week.  Washing day.  5 loads of laundry and one load of nappies/diapers.  Done, but an issue.

The downstairs toilet started bubbling. Then the laundry bubbles started coming up while the washing machine was running.  Our house was renovated in the last 10 years and we’ve NEVER had a drainage / plumbing issue.   Damn, I think –  time to get the plumber in…

A few hours and a few hundred dollars later: plumber extracts stinky white mess from about 15m down the garden on the end of his spinning, whirring, metal machine.   He examines stinky white mess and asks:

“Do you flush your nappy wipes down the loo?”….

…and the pasta comes back up again. April 23, 2010

So we’ve had the dreaded gastro bug that people tell me has been going around. Poogie, you started with it early Saturday morning, Aunt R1 got it on Saturday morning too, your Dad got it on Sunday evening, and I got it on Wednesday afternoon. So we’ve had a few days of retching (more…)

Eating is a messy business. April 15, 2010

It’s somewhat circular isn’t it.  Eating is messy when you’re young, when you’re really old, and not as much fun in between. We’re just too polite to really get as messy as it should be sometimes.

You enjoyed your pasta for dinner tonight.  I can tell. Which is good as the doctor is a bit worried about your weight… (more…)

Going slightly crazy. (any suggestions for activities for a 10 month old??) April 13, 2010

Hello Poogie,

Well, we’ve been out of action for 9-10 days now and both you and I are going slightly crazy…. To say the least.

I’m confident we’re on the home stretch, but this flu has been horrible. And so not only have we been feeling not great, but in the interests of infecting the least number of others we’ve been laying low and staying around home a lot. And you and I are both sick of the walls in the house. (more…)
